You can own Charleston's oldest residence

One thing I love about being a photographer in Charleston is the opportunity to document incredible historical homes. In many cases I am asked to shoot large opulent mansions- Summer homes for the 18th or 19th century planters.

 

A couple weeks ago I photographed a different kind of historical building. There were no grand piazzas or intricate cornice moldings. Instead, The little Pink House at 17 Chalmers Street is a 1085 square foot pied-a-terre dating to 1688!

For a history buff like me, the original fireplaces and staircases bring to mind over 300 years of Charleston history. Among other things, the home once served as a brothel for sailors making their way down the ballast stone streets from the wharf. Its striking to imagine that people might have watched as the new St. Philips Church was being constructed during the early decades of the 18th century.
